welcome to the "tonight show," everybody! [ cheers and applause ] welcome, everybody. at first i want to say hello to everyone at home who is getting ready for bed, and to all of the students at villanova who are still drunk from last night. hey, guys! hey! ♪ [ cheers and applause ] sleep it off. sleep it off, that's right everybody. the ncaa tournament wrapped up last night with villanova coming out on top. and if you won your office march madness pool, congratulations, all of your co-workers hate you now. [ cheers and applause ] you're not supposed to win. but villanova really played great, they beat michigan 79-62. [ cheers ] i'm not saying villanova was cocky, but at halftime all five starters left for the nba. they already -- [ laughter ] they split, they already signed. they already got uniforms, everything. i saw that the philadelphia police greased up all of the street light poles -- in philly.

and all around campus ahead of the game to try to stop people from climbing the poles. [ light laughter ] that's interesting, i didn't realize that police officers were the ones that had to do that, but -- here's what a few philly officers said about it before the game. this one said "in anticipation of fans getting rowdy, we're optimizing security, especially on the villanova campus." while this officer said, "i grease the poles." the light poles. i greased the poles real good. [ laughter and applause ] then the first officer said, "well, we'll monitor the streets throughout the game and close off areas we feel are vulnerable to disruptive activity." and this officer said, "i greased the poles. with crisco, butter, oil, whatever can lubricate a pole, i'm a pole-luber, i lube the poles." [ cheers and applause ] just stop talking. then we're good. let's get to some news this week. president trump has been

sending angry tweets about amazon, for the way they run their business. and someone handed trump some bubble wrap from an amazon box and he forgot all about it. [ laughter and applause ] "oh, my god. oh, my god, this is amazing! can you hear it pop?" [ laughter ] but after trump attacked amazon on twitter, their stock fell by 5%. [ audience ohs ] it's all part of trump's plan to get amazon stock to match his approval rating. [ audience oohs ] [ laughter and applause ] i guess trump is claiming that amazon cost the u.s. postal service, too much money. trump loves the post office, except every time he licks a a stamp, he makes them sign a a nondisclosure agreement. so, you have to understand. [ laughter and applause ] >> steve: hey-oh! hey! >> jimmy: you gotta be -- better to be safe than sorry. >> steve: hey! >> jimmy: "make it go away! [ light laughter ] just make it go away." i saw that later this month, trump will host japan's prime minister, shinzo abe at mar-a-lago. if you don't remember, abe is the guy who did this after shaking hands with trump. watch this.

[ laughter ] >> steve: shinzo abe. >> jimmy: so trump doesn't want that to happen again. so he's been reading up on japanese culture to impress abe. he's even released a video. this is nice. take a look at this. >> being president of the united states, i've learned so much about japan. i can even use some of their most popular words. for example, "anime." i've fired several members of my cabinet, "an' i may" fire more. "sumo." i spoke to my lawyers and they said i can't afford to "sue mo' people" "udon." i tried to kiss melania but she said "ew, don." [ laughter ] and finally, "soba." my staffers say that working for me makes it hard to stay "soba'." great. >> steve: yeah. >> jimmy: i saw that six of trump's cabinet members have been questioned about improper spending. trump was shocked, he said, "i still have six cabinet members? how is that possible?" [ laughter and applause ] listen to this. a student at central michigan university performed cpr on a a squirrel that was found drowning in a campus pool. lhlh even more strange, as she was doing the cpr, the squirrel was winking at his friends. [ laughter and applause ] and finally, i read about an australian couple that put a a gopro on their dog instead of hiring a wedding photographer. [ laughter and applause ] and i look over to see who it was -- >> jimmy: not bad, not bad. >> it was a taxi going like 20 miles an hour. [ laughter ] and i couldn't be mad. a guy who was like, "oh --" and just like the trajectory to hit -- he must have been drafted after that -- i mean he was the most -- >> jimmy: yeah, i mean seriously, that's good aim. >> it was the most -- it was really good. >> jimmy: how are the girls doing? >> fantastic. >> jimmy: yeah? how old are they now? >> you know what it's like to have two girls. >> jimmy: yeah. >> i have daughters. >> jimmy: it's the best thing in the world. >> it is the best thing in the world. tea parties, hairbands, for me -- [ laughter ] it's not them. >> jimmy: no, yeah, exactly. and then they catch you -- they go, "daddy, can we play?" >> can i get in on that tea party? >> jimmy: yeah. do you do tea parties with the girls? >> i do, yeah. you know how everybody says like, "wow, my kid's really smart." we've so tried to not do that, 'cause everybody goes, "every kid is smart."

>> jimmy: yeah. >> but i think my oldest daughter is like a jedi. [ laughter ] and it's like a manipulative, negative jedi because one day we were going over colors and she goes -- this is early on, like she was one and a half or something and she goes, "daddy, what's your favorite color?" and i said, "blue." and i knew her favorite color was blue and she went, "oh, your favorite color is purple?" and i went, "no, my favorite color is blue." and she went, "oh, your favorite color's purple. there's purple." [ laughter ] and i was like, "that's so weird --" and after two years now, i'm like, "my favorite color -- purple." [ laughter ] >> jimmy: it actually worked, though? >> it worked! i totally -- now she hands me things and very sadly, like two weeks ago, she's like, "daddy, your favorite color can blue." and i went, "no, my favorite color is purple." [ laughter ] i was still -- i was still locked in. she's like, "dad, dad!" >> jimmy: she's making a block levitate around the -- teacup pours itself, yeah. >> yeah, exactly. >> jimmy: and how -- how's your wife? the beautiful emily blunt. >> fantastic. >> jimmy: we love emily. we -- [ cheers and applause ] >> that reaction means i married up. and don't i know it. >> jimmy: oh, no. >> don't i know it. >> jimmy: i wouldn't say you married up, no. >> oh, no, no, no.

[ cheers and applause ] i went to visit her all the time. i was shooting something else but i went almost every weekend and it was going great, the customs, whole experiences, whatever. >> jimmy: you got to get through customs. >> yeah, yeah, yeah. and then i hit this guy who's about my age and he looked like he was ready to get a little surly with me and he said, "it says here that you're an actor." and i said, "yeah." he said, "would i know you from anything?" [ light laughter ] i went, you know, we redid the uk version of "the office." strike one. [ laughter ] >> he's like, "oh -- oh -- you took what we did perfect." >> jimmy: "i hated that version!" [ laughter ] >> and then i said, "yeah." and he says, "who you visiting here?" i said, "my wife." and he says, "is she an actress?" i said, "yeah." he said, "would i know her?" i went, "i don't know, man, her name is emily blunt." he seriously goes, "you?" [ laughter and applause ] and i went, "yeah." and he goes, "you, you married emily blunt?" and i go, "yeah." and he goes like this, "okay, go, just go." [ laughter ]

"a quiet place" -- >> yeah, you have to get quiet for it. >> let me tell you something, man. i watched it last night and i couldn't sleep afterwards. >> really? >> jimmy: it was frightening. and i was just thinking, why would a funny human being like you make such a scary, frightening movie like this? are you a fan of horror movies? >> oh, my god, never have been

a fan of horror. i mean, i am now. >> jimmy: yeah. >> it's true. [ laughter ] >> jimmy: well, it's scary. >> i am terrified of everything. and then i got really into horror directing this, so i'm now a huge fan. but basically what happened was, i was sent a script three weeks after having our second daughter. and so yes, it's a scary movie. but what was in it is a story about this family, trying to survive. what would it -- you know, what would you do for your kids? like, what extremes would you go to protect your kids? and i was such a wide-open vessel after having our second daughter that i was just like, "oh, my god. this is so good." [ laughter ] and so now, when people say like, "man, the movie's so scary," i'm like, "thank you so much." but the best compliment is when people come out and they said i never thought i would cry in a a horror movie. i'm like, "that's it! that's why i did it." >> jimmy: yeah, i mean, seriously, i was -- >> did you cry? >> jimmy: i did. well, of course i did. yeah, you know -- you know the scene. >> yeah, of course. >> jimmy: yeah, of course, man. can we set up the movie? or do you want me to set it up? i'll tell people what i think the movie's about. >> when you get it wrong, i'll do it. >> jimmy: great. [ laughter ] basically you live in a world where you, if anyone makes a a sound, any sound at all, you could be killed by some type of

monster. >> that's right. that's pretty good. >> jimmy: yeah, thank you. that's it. no, seriously, so it's -- >> yeah, it's a family who has to live quietly and you have to figure out why they're living quietly. >> jimmy: but, i mean, if when you have kids, you can't have them be quiet. >> no, that's the crazy thing about this movie is people have been leaving saying they went to the bathroom and, like, as soon as they turned on the faucet, they were like -- "no." [ laughter ] >> jimmy: dude, seriously -- any sound, you think that someone's going to die in this movie and you're like -- >> on twitter, somebody said i got in and my boyfriend turned on the radio and she said, "are you nuts?" >> jimmy: "they're going to get is, man!" i told you last night, my review is that i had nothing to -- i had nothing to watch after to make me get out of this crazy. i was so -- >> so you were just in the -- >> jimmy: dude, i watched the rerun of "gilmore girls" just to get me through -- just to get me to a happy place. just to get me -- because, it -- and whoever designed this monster alien thing. >> yeah. that was me. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: see, that's what made me crazier and crazier. because i go, "who would think to do this type of crazy movie?"

and i go, "it was written by john krasinski." i go, "ah, my god." i go, "and then he casts himself?" and -- [ laughter ] "he's starring in it, as well?" but it was just twisted. >> yeah. >> jimmy: and so good and it is moving as well. and then you cast your wife as your wife -- >> yeah. >> jimmy: in the movie, as well, and i go, "oh, we got to talk. [ laughter ] i mean, dude -- >> i just lay down on this couch and you're like -- >> jimmy: tell me everything, yeah. [ laughter ] what's it like directing your wife in a film? >> it's unbelievable. i could make a joke, but the truth is, we were so nervous the night before because we really wanted to do this. but you're nervous, you both have your own process and you're not sure if it's going to link up. you know, she's -- i think everybody thinks because we're actors we have the same experiences. it's actually completely opposite experiences because she's off in another country shooting something totally different with different people. so what i learned was i've learned actually was i've always been the biggest fan of hers, but not until you're in the room when she does what she does. do you know why she's so phenomenal. she's the most unbelievably talented person. powerful person. kindest person she makes everyone around her better. so, honestly, that was my experience, the best experience ever. i'm retiring is the whole point.

[ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: i just want to quickly say i love my wife so much. i love you, nancy. you're the best, most powerful -- greatest person i've ever met. and -- >> when emily and i met it was love at first sight. >> jimmy: the experiences together -- [ talking over each other ] [ cheers and applause ] ♪ >> oh, my god. we just connected in our brains. >> jimmy: i know we did. >> it was not the best. >> jimmy: a little brain connection there, yeah. >> it was so weird, it was great. >> jimmy: but the movie is frightening. [ laughter ] no, the movie is scary. >> thank you so much. >> jimmy: but it does have touching moments. i don't want to spoil anything but, man, you know what scene emily is unbelievable.

>> yeah. >> jimmy: i don't know how you even act or prepare to act -- >> yeah. >> jimmy: act for that one scene. and maybe you've maybe seen the trailer -- it's the bathtub one. >> yeah, there's a bath tub scene that's super intense. and i'll also tell you this is how good she is. she does one take of that scene, that's it. one, that's all we need. and we were all so shocked, the crew was like this -- like holding the microphone and stuff. and then i call, "cut." and this is how professional my wife is. she goes, "does anybody know what they have for lunch?" [ laughter ] like, right after the most intense scene ever -- it's like, "cut." "woo, she has chicken?" >> jimmy: she is phenomenal. >> "is it like chicken or? [ laughter ] where they like -- >> jimmy: oh, of course. >> where they like -- where it's like the cameras and -- i was so green, i had never been on camera before, so i, you know, i would finish the scene and they'd say, "okay, that was great." and then i'd walked and they're like, "no, no, no, come back. come back. you have to stay there." and i'm like, "for what?" they're like, "for the final moment." i'm like, "to do what?" "react!"

at the end of every scene and you're golden." and i was like, "thank you?" like were she trying to help me or was she out to get me? we still don't know. >> jimmy: yeah, exactly, but did you take that advice? >> oh, i totally did and i still use it to this day. on my new show, "timeless." >> jimmy: exactly. congrats on "timeless," by the way. >> thank you. >> jimmy: it's a fantastic show. sundays 10:00 p.m. on nbc. you're basically going back in time to stop this guy from changing history. >> yeah, we've got this evil, ne'er-do-well, kind of organization called rittenhouse and they drop a sleeper agent in every time and we've got to go back and figure out what they're doing and try and stop them from whatever they're doing. but we're basically making a a new movie every single week -- >> jimmy: but look you get to wear fun outfits like this. i mean, look at that, come on. >> yes, look at that. >> jimmy: that's, come on -- >> derriere. >> jimmy: no, i mean the whole outfit. i mean how fun is that though, to be -- >> i mean the whole outfit. >> jimmy: yeah. >> it's really fun -- >> jimmy: what did you have to do in this scene, though? >> well, it's interesting because underneath that very tim burton, helena bonham carter get up. it's like 17 layers of clothing. and then they were like, "okay. and on our last night at 4:00 a.m. when we wrap, we want

you to run through the alley in this costume." and i am the clumsiest person. like falling is like -- it follows me everywhere i go. [ light laughter ] >> jimmy: really? >> oh -- so i'm super glad -- and i was like, "i can't run in this thing. have you seen -- i can barely walk in this thing. how do you expect me to run?" and they were like, "and action!" and then i just run like -- like gal godot, just like -- like leapt out of my body. just like perfect! >> jimmy: yes, "wonder woman!" yeah, you were going for it. >> "wonder woman" and they were like, "cut." and they were like, "that was perfect. that was amazing. do it again!" and i'm like, "ah! okay, fine." >> jimmy: "okay, yes, of course!" >> "action!" just running -- just like so like perfect both times. i made such a scene about like, "i can't run in this!" and i run perfectly. and then they were like, "okay, you're wrapped!" and so they put me in the van and i drive back to basecamp where all of our trailers are and i'm getting, you know, i'm like, "can you believe it? it was just perfect." and then i -- i'm getting out of the van and i guess my, the bottom of that very, you know, illustrious, skirt got caught on something in the van and i

like lost my equilibrium and i literally like back-flopped onto the cement. it was like "alice in wonderland," just stripes and cheshire cat eyes, just like -- just like -- >> jimmy: cheshire cat eyes! [ laughter ] >> just like falling back and there was nothing i could grab on to. but luckily i had the 17 layers underneath me and it like caught my fall and everybody is running, they think maybe i had a concussion. and i'm just on the floor, no one can get me up, 'cause i'm laughing so hard. i start crying. 'cause i can't believe i did the running perfect and then i can't get out of the van. >> jimmy: it's like you're wearing a mattress. i mean, it's really like wearing -- just fall right back onto it. >> yeah, yeah, safety! >> jimmy: well we talked to the producers at "timeless" and we said, "are there any other clumsy moments that you have of abigail?" and they sent us a videotape of some of your finer -- moments that have never been seen on tv. >> no, i have not -- i have not seen these. >> jimmy: here's the video of several times that you've fallen on the set of "timeless." >> 72 times. >> jimmy: this is real.
